Bathroom Plumbing

Bathrooms, Showers and Baths

Whether you’re creating a brand new bathroom or renovating an existing suite, there are a few things to consider.

Before buying any bathroom appliances or fittings it’s well worth planning and designing your new bathroom suite with the help of an expert, like a local plumber. A free consultation will help you determine what’s realistic staying within budget.

What water system does your house use?

The properties' water system could impact on your choice of bathroom fittings. It’s important to choose a bathroom shower and taps that work efficiently with the water system in your home.

The most common UK domestic water system uses cold water directly from a storage tank, and the hot water comes from a cylinder, this is generally known as a low-pressure water system. In this case, a water pump may be required to help increase the water pressure for a power or electric shower.

Alternatively, you may have a combination boiler which creates hot water instantaneously on demand. If you have one of these boilers, your water will be high-pressure because the entire water system is fed directly by the water mains, both mixer and electric showers will work well with this type of water system.

Toilets, Basins and Bidets

The bathroom basin, bath, shower, toilet and bidet wastewater will need to discharge directly into a soil stack on the outside wall, this connects to the main sewer or an underground drainage system. Some properties will have one pipe for soil waste and another for wastewater.

If you’re having a new bathroom or en-suite built into a loft space, you’ll need to consider the location of the outside drains, try and plan so that pipes connect easily to existing bathroom pipes from other floors.
