Toilet Plumbing

Toilet Installation and Flush Repairs

There are several types of toilets available, so you need to be aware of what can be fitted, and where; before making a purchase. It’s always worth consulting a local plumber to assess the room and current toilet set up in the property.

The most common toilet design and style is the closed-coupled toilet, it has a ceramic wall mounted cistern sitting on top of a pan as shown in the photo. The waste pipe can generally go in any direction, and is available to purchase with either a button dual flush or lever handle.

Back to wall toilets have the cistern concealed in the wall or piece of furniture to provide a minimalist finish. Some of the concealed cisterns measure less than 10cm in depth, ideal when plumbing a toilet in a restricted space.

Wall mounted toilets need to be well supported and can usually be fitted to any wall provided it’s reinforced to support around 200kg weight. However, if your current waste pipe exits left or right of the toilet, you won’t be able install this option.

There are two major components in a toilet cistern, the flush and the refill valve. To understand how a toilet flush works, just remove the cistern lid and watch what happens during a flush cycle.

Ballcock refill valves are prone to problems, so if you have one of these it’s worth considering replacing with a modern refill valve.
